Fall 2011 Conference

Joint 2011 WIAHEAD Fall Conference and Madison College Mental Health Summit

Madison College Downtown Campus – 211 North Carroll Street November 17-18, 2011

WIAHEAD partnered with Madison College to provide a mental health summit with district wide community based providers and county programs that serve our student population. The Mental Health Summit track occured on November 17th, the first day. David Mays provided a half day morning session on College Student Mental Health and an afternoon session on risk assessment.

The WIAHEAD afternoon sessions featured noted disability rights Attorney Paul Grossman, who reviewed the significant changes in the ADA Amendments Act and how it impacts colleges. AHEAD President Scott Lissner was unable to attend, and Paul Grossman was gracious enough to do additional presentations, including a historical look at our mission as accessibility service providers. Todd Schwanke again led an AT Roundtable discussion, and Dedra Hafner discussed students with disabilities and the college experience along with two students from Edgewood College’s Cutting Edge program.

Madison College counselors hosted a separate 1.5 hour working lunch with providers to discuss local mental health trends, campus resources, and community referral services. Madison College counselors and community providers ended their day with a discussion on next steps for fostering college and community partnerships.

On November 18th, day two, the morning focused on the issues regarding our returning wounded warriors. The morning ended with a panel of two Madison area veterans who are students sharing what has been important to them in their success as students. The afternoon had a review of the year in the federal court as it pertains to disability rights and service provision, presented by Paul Grossman, as well as a tour of the new universally designed McBurney Center on the UW Campus.
